The full posting

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

T Brand is a growing team of editors, designers, strategists, and more who create branded content across the gamut of The New York Times's advertisers. Our work takes many forms — reported articles, documentary videos, animations, photo essays, social posts, podcasts, interactive data visualizations, event activations and Newsroom sponsorships.

As a Front-End Web Engineer, you will contribute to the development of our front-end products, including Paid Posts, the Flex Suite, and custom interactive applications. Working with senior engineers and your manager, you will implement responsive features, building modular components, and writing clean, maintainable, readable, and reusable code across our advertising templates. You will collaborate with the broader creative team, participates in code reviews, and grows their technical skillset across our modern front-end stack.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City Headquarters. You will report to the Director of Design.

  • Create fluid animations and interactive visual elements using CSS and web animation libraries (such as GreenSock/GSAP).
  • Implement front-end development for web products, including advertising templates and interactive single-page applications under technical guidance.
  • Follow established coding standards, design patterns, and best practices, producing clean, modular, and reusable HTML, JavaScript/TypeScript, and CSS (SASS).
  • Participate in regular code reviews, receiving constructive feedback and applying team design principles to improve code quality.
  • Receive mentorship from Web Engineers, Senior Web Engineers, and Lead Engineers, participating in team learning projects and technical growth.
  • Collaborate with partners (Design, Product, and Editorial) to translate creative mockups and requirements into functional web experiences.
  • Support front-end performance, cross-browser compatibility, and accessibility best practices across all developed features.
  • Help resolve technical debt, fix bugs, and maintain clear project documentation and detailed work tickets (e.g., in Jira).
  • Integrate AI-assisted workflows and modern developer tools to improve code production, improve, and boost development efficiency.
  • Implement best practices in version control using Git and GitHub, managing repositories, branching strategies, and collaborative code reviews.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Director of Design.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in front-end web development.

  • Knowledge of responsive web design principles, cross-browser compatibility, and web accessibility standards.
  • Basic familiarity with version control workflows using Git.
  • Careful eye for detail when debugging and troubleshooting front-end code.
  • Clear communication, excellent interpersonal skills, with a collaborative mindset when working with designers and project managers.

Preferred Qualifications:
